The Florida Gators are national champions once again! In a nail-biting final game of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, Florida defeated the Houston Cougars 65-63 on Monday night in San Antonio, Texas.
A Historic Comeback Victory
Florida trailed for nearly the entire game and was down by 12 points early in the second half. With just over 16 minutes remaining, the Gators were struggling to score against Houston’s strong defense. Under the leadership of head coach Todd Golden, Florida slowly clawed back into the game. With a 15-3 scoring run late in the second half, the Gators tied the game and built momentum. They finally took the lead in the final minute of the game—their first lead since early in the first half.

As the ball slipped loose with just seconds left, Alex Condon dove on it, and the buzzer sounded. Florida had done it—they won their third national title and their first since 2007.
Youngest Coach to Win Since Tournament Expansion
Coach Todd Golden, at just 39 years old, became the youngest coach to win the NCAA title since the tournament expanded to 64 teams. After the game, he praised his team’s resilience:
“When we went down 12 in the second half, we stayed the course. We didn’t point fingers or panic. We got rewarded because of the toughness we showed.”
Heartbreak for Houston
For Houston, it was another painful end to an impressive season. This was their seventh Final Four and third appearance in the national title game, but they are still searching for their first championship.
